Housing Development

Los Alamos County Strategic Goal for Housing is "Increasing the amount and types of housing options. This includes a variety of housing options for all segments of the community, from affordable, entry-level, and live-work housing to new options for those interested in downsizing or moving closer to central areas of the community." With that in mind the Economic Development Division is working with developers on the following projects and initiatives currently underway.

What does County-supported mean?

“County Supported” refers to development projects facilitated by Los Alamos County through technical assistance, land sales for market-rate projects, or in-kind land donations and grant-funding specifically for deed-restricted, long-term affordable housing.

County-supported

There are currently 1,481 potential housing units that are County-supported. Of this total, 409 units have been built and another 437 units are actively moving toward construction.

20th Street Mixed-Use Redevelopment

The redevelopment area (the “Property”) comprised of two county-owned parcels on 20th Street, south of Trinity Drive.

Coyote Mesa

A Solicitation was posted in July 2024 for the County-owned lot on DP Road in Los Alamos. This property was transferred to a private development company on March 11, 2026.

North Mesa Housing

Develop workforce housing on a 30-acre +/- tract of land on the North Mesa, between the Los Alamos Middle School, the North Mesa Sports Complex, North Mesa Road and San Ildefonso Rd. The land is currently owned by the Los Alamos Public School district. The overall goal is to generate a preferred concept plan for housing that can be carried forward into design and development.

Private

All of these projects are solely private developments. There are a potential of 934 the County has approved to be built. To date, only 5 have been completed and another 265 are in various states of progress.
