The Cañada del Buey Trail begins along NM 4, across from the White Rock Visitor Center, and extends as a 10- foot-wide paved side path to Rover Boulevard. Beyond Rover Boulevard, the trail continues to Meadow Lane (approximately 1 mile) as a crusher fines surface ranging from 4 to 8 feet in width. Along this corridor, the trail provides important connections to surrounding neighborhoods and Chamisa Elementary School. In total, the trail and its connections span approximately 6,300 feet (1.2 miles), linking Downtown White Rock to the west with Overlook Sports Park to the east.
This project will upgrade the segment between Rover Boulevard and Meadow Lane to a fully accessible, 8- to 10-foot-wide paved or concrete trail. Improvements will also include enhancements to two arroyo crossings—one currently consisting of a 4-foot-wide bridge and the other a low-water crossing. Upon completion, the project will establish a continuous 3-mile paved trail from the NM 4/Monte Rey Drive intersection on the west side of White Rock to Overlook Sports Park.
Los Alamos County Public Works secured Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) funding to support the project.
