Due to ongoing dry conditions and prevailing high winds, Fire Marshal Colorado Cordova of the Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) has enacted fire restrictions to Stage 1, effective April 28, within the boundaries of Los Alamos County to safeguard public health and safety, as well as protect lands, structures, natural and historical artifacts. Los Alamos County Emergency Management is partnering with the American Red Cross to offer a Shelter Operations Training for community members interested in supporting disaster response efforts. During disasters, the American Red Cross helps ensure individuals and families who are displaced have a safe place to stay, a hot meal, and access to essential support services. This training will introduce participants to the fundamentals of operating a disaster shelter and how volunteers assist communities during emergencies. Participants will learn about the roles and responsibilities of shelter workers, the process for opening and closing a shelter, and best practices for supporting shelter residents during disasters. The training will also include a hands-on simulation where participants will practice opening and operating a shelter. The training will be held Saturday, April 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the White Rock Training Center / Emergency Operations Center, 139 Longview Drive, White Rock, NM. Space is limited to 25 participants and registration is required. Community members interested in attending can register here: Register Now
