Due to ongoing dry conditions and prevailing high winds, Fire Marshal Colorado Cordova of the Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) has enacted fire restrictions to Stage 1, effective April 28, within the boundaries of Los Alamos County to safeguard public health and safety, as well as protect lands, structures, natural and historical artifacts. Los Alamos County’s contractor for the Jemez Mountain Fire Protection Project, DUB-L-EE, will began paving operations on Camp May Road this week. The following closures will be in place for Camp May Road:
The road will remain closed to the public from Monday morning through Thursday at 5 p.m. until April 30. This closure includes Camp May and trails that are accessed from Camp May Road.
Camp May Road will reopen from May 1 to May 31.
Beginning June 1 Camp May, Camp May Road and adjoining trailheads will be closed Monday through Thursday until the end of the year.
The Phase III Project will begin on June 2 and Camp May Road will be closed Monday through Thursday until final completion of the project.
The work on Camp May Road is being done under the Jemez Mountain Fire Protection Project (JMFPP) which began in April 2025. This project includes installation of underground utility infrastructure up to Pajarito Mountain. Waterlines and conduit for electric and fiber lines have been installed. Installation of vaults for fiber and electric lines has also been completed.
