Due to ongoing dry conditions and prevailing high winds, Fire Marshal Colorado Cordova of the Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) has enacted fire restrictions to Stage 1, effective April 28, within the boundaries of Los Alamos County to safeguard public health and safety, as well as protect lands, structures, natural and historical artifacts. Sandoval County and the U.S. Forest Service responded to a small fire at East Fork in the Jemez Mountains on Friday afternoon, March 28. Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) response was not requested. Residents may see and smell smoke in the area, but LAFD officials indicate there is no cause for alarm. The fire was contained to one acre, and crews will remain to ensure no flare-ups. LAFD reminds the community to be extra cautious and aware of the concerning fire conditions following the dry winter season.
