The County will be installing two EV charging stations powered by two level Direct Current Fast Chargers, dual-port networked chargers at the Mesa Public Library parking lot (2400 Central Ave., Los Alamos).
R&M will perform construction work to accommodate the power supply systems and support pads for the chargers, install the chargers, make an accessible charging station, install bollards to prevent vehicles from hitting the chargers, and provide an emergency power shut-off.
Work will be confined to the main parking area located on the south side of the Mesa Public Library, off Oppenheimer Drive (see detail of map below). Minimal interruptions to traffic are anticipated on the Library drive-thru or in the main parking lot.
These charging stations will be available to the public and for the County’s fleet at the completion of the project. A fee will be required to use the chargers at a rate of $0.58/kWh.
Project Purpose
This project is part of the strategies to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions outlined in the Los Alamos Climate Action Plan adopted by County Council in November 2024. The main goals of this project are:
1) Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the County fleet and community vehicles
2) Expand electric vehicle (EV) charging network
3) Promote EV adoption
Project schedule
Construction will begin in 2026, with regular milestones including commissioning of charging stations, removal of existing of level 2 chargers and ribbon cutting. (More details to come.)
This project supports the following Council’s Strategic Goals:
Effective, Efficient, and Reliable Services
Deliver customer-focused, accessible, reliable, and sustainable services to the community through sound financial management, collaborative decision-making, and efficient implementation.
Natural Resource Protection
Take actions to protect wildlife and wildlife habitat, safeguard water quality, and mitigate tree loss in the community.
Greenhouse Gas Reduction
Achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, with interim targets of 30 percent reduction by 2030 and 80 percent reduction by 2040.
Carbon-Neutral Energy Supply
Achieve carbon neutrality in electrical supply by 2040 through diversified carbon-free electric sourcing and phase out natural gas use in County facilities by 2050 and in residences and businesses by 2070.
