Los Alamos County Community Services Department will host two special ribbon cuttings to celebrate the completion of the Piñon Park and 37th St. Playground American with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility updates and renovations. The celebrations will be held at the newly finished parks on Tuesday, May 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Piñon Park (10 Sherwood Blvd., White Rock) and Noon at the 37th St. Playground (2137 37th St., Los Alamos).
Both playgrounds were identified as needing improvements to meet ADA accessibility requirements and improvements based on the CSD Integrated Master Plan. The renovations improved safety, access, and provided a much-needed update to park amenities. One important goal was to reduce barriers that individuals with disabilities may encounter when enjoying the parks. Some ADA approved park characteristic improvements include:
  • ADA Accessible sidewalks at 37th Street Playground
  • Addition of adaptive swing seats at both parks
The completed project meets standards for park design and construction best practices requirements as outlined by the U.S. Access Board Public Right of Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG) and with the intent of the Americans with Disabilities Act 1994 and 2010.
This project supports the Los Alamos County Council's Strategic Goal of Quality of Life, Strategic Objective of Inclusion, Access and Belonging and implementation of the Community Services Department's Integrated Master Plan.
