Non-essential county government facilities will open at 10 a.m. on Fri

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Los Alamos County, with temperatures expected to drop below freezing tonight. In response to these conditions, Acting County Manager Linda Matteson has ordered a 10 a.m. start for all non-essential County government services and facilities on Friday, Nov. 8.

Some variations to County services are as follows:

• Atomic City Transit: Fixed-route bus service will begin at approximately 7 a.m. on Friday morning. For specific route information, visit www.atomiccitytransit.com or check the ACTracker.
• Environmental Services: There will be no disruption to Friday’s refuse and yard trimmings pickup routes. The crew will complete their scheduled route as planned. However, the Eco Station and White Rock Convenience Center will not open until 10 a.m. Residents are reminded that tomorrow’s Friday household hazardous waste collection has been canceled and rescheduled for November 15.

• Recreation and Libraries: All activities and programs scheduled before 10 a.m. are canceled at the Aquatic Center, Mesa Public and White Rock Branch libraries, Golf Pro Shop, and the senior centers. This includes all morning classes, swimming lessons, and other activities. After 10 a.m., once facilities are open, contact the facility and/or webpage to check on any program or event changes. 

County Traffic and Streets crews will continue to clear the major roads and streets according to the FY2025 Snow and Ice Plan. To aid in these efforts and ensure public safety, residents are asked to:

• Park vehicles off the street when possible.
• Stagger parked vehicles if off-street parking is unavailable.
• Keep storm drains clear of snow and debris.
• Avoid shoveling snow into the street.

Unfortunately due to a power outage affecting sections of Northern New Mexico, the Traffic and Streets staff report the My Commute webpage, which provides live updates on the conditions of major roadways in Los Alamos County, is currently unavailable. Once the power is restored, they predict it will be functional again.

Drivers are urged to reduce speeds and exercise caution if travel is necessary during the storm.
