NM-4 is now closed at the main entrance of Valles Caldera National Preserve due to active firefighting activities on the McCauley Springs Fire.
Due to ongoing dry conditions and prevailing high winds, Fire Marshal Colorado Cordova of the Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) has elevated fire restrictions to Stage 2, effective May 28, 2026 within the boundaries of Los Alamos County to safeguard public health and safety, as well as protect lands, structures, natural and historical artifacts.
In collaboration with the Los Alamos County Health Council (LACHC), the County's Social Services staff, developed a Los Alamos County Comprehensive Health Plan (CHP). The County Council adopted the CHP in December 2024, which provides a plan to guide the County over the next five to seven years in the community's health, wellness, and social services planning in the community. The Final CHP and Appendices are below.

Appendix C: Interim Report(PDF, 2MB)
The development of this CHP fulfills responsibilities under NM House Bill (HB) 137 “County and Tribal Health Councils Act” and the Incorporated County of Los Alamos Resolution No. 19-28 (that created the LACHC in its current form: as a County Board or Commission -December 3rd 2019). This CHP builds upon previous health planning efforts that were conducted by contracted consulting firms. In 2021, the LACHC received funding from the CDC Health Equity and Community Rebuilding Initiative (Kellogg Grant) to dedicate to this work. By supplementing this grant with American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, the Los Alamos County Social Services Division was able to hire a public health professional with 20 years of community-based public health planning experience to guide these efforts. The current process is rooted in the community with intentional outreach to a wide diversity of residents and service providers. Careful attention will be paid to those needs and barriers that have continued to be priorities over time.
