With the news of vehicle incursions into public gatherings that have gained national attention, Los Alamos County is proactively evaluating options for the installation of a permanent barrier system at Ashley Pond Park.

This project will install crash-related barriers to protect park-goers and crowds attending public events from either deliberate or accidental vehicle incursions into Ashley Park Park. The park’s open pathways sit directly next to the busy transportation corridor of Trinity Drive, leaving crowds vulnerable without a physical barrier.

As a temporary measure, we have installed moveable concrete barriers along Trinity Drive, but these are unsightly, on loan, and only out seasonally. This project will provide year-round protection while designing a barrier that complements the park's historic aesthetics.

We're seeking to balance proactive public safety with community preservation—without creating an overly fortified or unwelcome environment. To achieve this, we've partnered with Groundworks Studios, a landscape architecture firm, to develop three design options, which are available for viewing in the image gallery.

Community input is vital to the success of this project. We invite you to participate in the decision-making process by sharing your thoughts on your preferred design option. Your input will help inform the final decision, along with recommendations from the following bodies:

  • Historic Preservation Board
  • Parks and Recreation Board
  • Transportation Board
  • County Council

You are invited to attend any of the scheduled board and Council meetings where the project will be presented.
