Due to ongoing dry conditions and prevailing high winds, Fire Marshal Colorado Cordova of the Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) has elevated fire restrictions to Stage 2, effective May 28, 2026 within the boundaries of Los Alamos County to safeguard public health and safety, as well as protect lands, structures, natural and historical artifacts.

Starting Monday, June 8, drivers are asked to use caution as work begins on the replacement of a 14-inch water transmission main along East Road/NM 502, across from the airport. The project is anticipated to be completed by the fall.
Construction will primarily occur south of the east-bound shoulder; however, traffic control measures will be in place east of the Fire Station 6 entrance and at the first curve before the Canyon Rim trailhead. Barrels and concrete barriers will be present on the shoulder in these locations to allow for safe passage of motorists and to facilitate access of construction vehicles and equipment to the work zone.
The project consists of installing a new 14-inch ductile iron water transmission main to replace an existing 14-inch steel waterline along East Road (NM 502) across from the Los Alamos Airport. Traffic impacts are expected to be minimal for most of the project due to the off-road nature of the work; however, there are two locations adjacent to the roadway where construction activities will occur closer to traffic and may result in minor traffic impedance.
