NM-4 is now closed at the main entrance of Valles Caldera National Preserve due to active firefighting activities on the McCauley Springs Fire.
Due to ongoing dry conditions and prevailing high winds, Fire Marshal Colorado Cordova of the Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) has elevated fire restrictions to Stage 2, effective May 28, 2026 within the boundaries of Los Alamos County to safeguard public health and safety, as well as protect lands, structures, natural and historical artifacts.

As of July 1, 2026, Los Alamos County will implement a 0.625% increase in the County's Gross Receipts Tax (GRT), raising the rate from 7.0625% to 7.6875%. This adjustment was approved by the County Council on October 28, 2025, through Ordinances No. 747 and No. 748.
New GRT Rate Composition:
- 2.6875% County/Municipal portion
- 0.1250% North Central Regional Transit District (NCRTD) increment
- 1.2250% State Shared - County Portion
- 3.6500% State Shared - State Portion
Total GRT Rate: 7.6875%
The increase was passed to support baseline County operations and various County strategic initiatives, including support of the debt issued for the Atomic Fiber broadband project.
