NM-4 is now closed at the main entrance of Valles Caldera National Preserve due to active firefighting activities on the McCauley Springs Fire.
Due to ongoing dry conditions and prevailing high winds, Fire Marshal Colorado Cordova of the Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) has elevated fire restrictions to Stage 2, effective May 28, 2026 within the boundaries of Los Alamos County to safeguard public health and safety, as well as protect lands, structures, natural and historical artifacts.

Los Alamos County invites community members to attend the second community engagement session for the Los Alamos Mesa Trail Rehabilitation Project on Wednesday, June 24 at 5:30 PM at Fuller Lodge (2132 Central Ave., Los Alamos, NM 87544).
This initiative focuses on creating a safer, more accessible, and welcoming trail experience for users of all abilities. The project will rehabilitate approximately 2,500 linear feet of the Los Alamos Mesa Trail to bring it into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Public Right of Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG). Planned improvements include revitalizing the trail surface and enhancing accessibility along the segment extending from East Park to Nambe Place and the Airport.
