Voting in Primary Elections

New Mexico Now has Semi-Open Primary Elections!

A primary election is an election held to allow voters to select major party candidates to move on to represent the parties in the general election. In the past, only voters registered with a major party could vote in a primary election in New Mexico.

That changes this year!

How do you vote? That depends on your voter registration status:

Registered with a Major Party (Democratic or Republican)

Registered with the Democratic or Republican parties? You can vote in your party's primary election as usual. After May 5, 2026, you cannot change your party on your voter registration.

Registered with a Minor Party (Libertarian or Green)

Registered as a Libertarian or with the Green Party? You must register with a major party or update your registration declining to state a political party in order to vote in the primary election. If you register without a major party, you may choose which ballot to vote.

Not Registered a Major or Minor Party

Not registered with a qualified political party? You can select a major party's ballot and vote in the primary election without updating your voter registration.
