Pedestrian safety improvements installed at Grand Canyon & Sherwood

Los Alamos, New Mexico—Public Works Traffic & Streets Division has completed the installation of pedestrian safety improvements at the intersection of Grand Canyon Drive and Sherwood Boulevard in White Rock. Improvements include installation of curb extensions designed to increase pedestrian visibility, encourage lower vehicle speeds and provide a safer, shorter crossing for pedestrians including schoolchildren.
The improvements are a result of an engineering study commissioned by the Public Works Engineering Division to evaluate traffic operations and pedestrian safety along Grand Canyon Drive. The study included field observations, traffic and pedestrian counts, crash-history research, sight-distance evaluations, and analyses of potential traffic safety measures.
The study included the Grand Canyon Ave/Sherwood Blvd. intersection and although the study determined that the intersection did not meet the established engineering warrants for a traffic signal or all-way stop control, several pedestrian focused safety measures were recommended including installation of traffic calming features.
Following the recent completion of the pavement preservation resurfacing project along Grand Canyon Traffic & Streets installed curb extensions containing plastic delineator posts at the intersection to raise driver awareness of the intersection and pedestrian activity, encouraging motorists to slow as they approach the intersection while also reducing the crossing distance pedestrians are exposed to vehicular traffic. The improvements are particularly intended to benefit children traveling to and from nearby Pinon Elementary School.

The County asks motorists to remain attentive, obey posted speed limits, come to a complete stop at stop signs and yield to pedestrians within the crosswalk. Drivers should use additional caution during school arrival and dismissal periods.
The completed project reflects Public Works continued commitment to using engineering analysis and community input to guide transportation improvements and enhance safety for pedestrians of all ages.
