NM-4 is now closed at the main entrance of Valles Caldera National Preserve due to active firefighting activities on the McCauley Springs Fire.
Due to ongoing dry conditions and prevailing high winds, Fire Marshal Colorado Cordova of the Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) has elevated fire restrictions to Stage 2, effective May 28, 2026 within the boundaries of Los Alamos County to safeguard public health and safety, as well as protect lands, structures, natural and historical artifacts.
The Canyon Rim Trail Phase III Project(PDF, 1MB) is progressing westward from the Smith's location to 20th Street. The project is currently being divided into sub phases to facilitate progress and completion. Sub Phase A will establish a connection to 15th Street, covering approximately 0.25 miles, while Sub Phase B will extend the connection to 20th Street, with the final alignment still pending.
A public meeting was held on May 1, 2025, at 5:30 PM at the Municipal Building Council Chambers. This project supports three of Council's Strategic Goals; infrastructure management, communication and engagement, and mobility. Staff has engaged the neighborhood and coordinated citizen involvement and feedback as a key part of the project development process, the project will improve and expand access to alternative modes of travel including cycling, and walking amenities.
A biological survey is being conducted in coordination with DOE/NNSA related to the Endangered Species Act. This evaluation will be complete in late summer 2026. Advertisement for construction will take place soon afterwards.
