Wildlife Assessment Project
Public support through iNaturalist observations
Living with wildlife is a natural part of living in Los Alamos. However, challenges exist when coexisting with wildlife. Deer populations have grown, which in turn causes them to be more of a nuisance and attracts large predators; droughts have caused wildlife to become more aggressive in their search for food and water; and more wildlife on roadways increases risks of vehicle collisions.
We're asking for your help in determining the health and presence of wildlife in Los Alamos County.
How to participate
Supporting this effort is quite easy. Follow these steps to start entering observations through iNaturalist.
- Download the free iNaturalist app or visit iNaturalist.org.
- Create a free account.
- Join the 2026 Los Alamos County Wildlife Assessment Project.
- Photograph wildlife you observe in Los Alamos County.
- Upload your observation to the project.
Every observation—whether it's a deer in your yard, a coyote on a morning walk, a rattlesnake on a trail, or a black bear on your home security camera—helps build a better understanding of the wildlife that calls Los Alamos County home. The findings will help ESI develop informed recommendations for actions the County can take to better manage local wildlife populations, reduce conflicts, and address areas of concern.
Pro tip: The goal is to capture wildlife trends. If you see what appears to be the same animal multiple times in one day, record it only once that day. If you see that animal again on a different day, submit a new observation. This approach helps create a more accurate picture of wildlife activity while avoiding duplicate reports.
