Final update

The construction phase of this project was completed on October 1, 2026. County staff coordinated with the vendor to activate the payment software and got the equipment available for public use on October 16, with the tap-to-pay function coming later. The ribbon-cutting ceremony officially kicked off their operation on November 2, 2026.

Overview

Los Alamos County installed two EV charging stations powered by two Direct Current Fast Chargers, dual-port networked chargers at the Mesa Public Library parking lot at 2400 Central Avenue.

R&M performed construction work to accommodate the power supply systems and support pads for the chargers, installed the chargers, made an accessible charging station, installed bollards to prevent vehicles from hitting the chargers, and provided an emergency power shut-off.

Work was confined to the main parking area located on the south side of the Mesa Public Library, off Oppenheimer Drive. Minimal interruptions to traffic was anticipated on the Library drive-thru or in the main parking lot.

The project took longer than originally expected, with a few starts and stops as equipment arrived.

These charging stations will be available to the public and for the County’s fleet at the completion of the project. A fee will be required to use the chargers at a rate of $0.68/kWh.

Purpose

This project is part of the strategies to reduce Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions outlined in the Los Alamos Climate Action Plan adopted by County Council in November 2024. The main goals of this project are:

  1. Reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the County fleet and community vehicles
  2. Expand electric vehicle (EV) charging network
  3. Promote EV adoption

Schedule

Construction began and was completed in 2026, with regular milestones including pouring of concrete parking pads, running power lines to the location, commissioning of charging stations, and a ribbon-cutting (more details to come).
